Business in Canada Offers Free Land to New Hires
We’ve heard of some interesting incentives companies use to attract and retain talented people, but one Canadian business is taking it to the next level.
The Farmer’s Daughters Country Market is offering jobs and two free acres of land if you relocate. That’s right, free land. The market located in a village on Cape Breton, an island at the eastern end of Novia Scotia desperately needs workers in its picturesque yet remote location.
The Facebook post advertising the job and land offer admits that you won’t get rich working there but the rural town offers a wholesome life that it hopes will entice someone to make the big move.
“We can’t give you big money, but we can give you an awesome life,” the Facebook post reads. “But we can offer you a great incentive to come and try us out. One thing our business does have is LOTS of LAND.”
New employees will get access to two acres of land to put a home on. If the employee stays on at The Farmer’s Daughter Country Market for five years, then the land is granted to the employee.
The job offer went up a few weeks ago and since then has attracted over 3,500 applicants and resulted in three new hires. The owners plan to hire more in the spring.
“We think we need to think outside of the box to keep Cape Breton true to its roots — a place where people live year-round and celebrate the beauty that surrounds us in music and stories, and where being a neighbour truly means you talk to everyone in the local co-op,” their original Facebook ad had stated.
