Everyone has a Why. Do you know yours? Your Why is the purpose, cause, or belief that inspires you to do what you do. The Why is not about making money – that’s a result. Your Why is the very reason you exist, according to leadership expert Simon Sinek.
Sinek calls this, “the golden circle.” He says that it’s not enough to know what you do and how you do it. At our essence, we are most motivated by knowing why we do things. And it’s through that awareness that we can best connect with and sell to others.
Selling, he says, is a human experience. “People don’t buy what you do: they buy why you do it.” The key examples that he offers, including the Wright Brothers, Apple Computers, and the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., made their mark not because of the uniqueness of their product of ideas. Nor was it that they were better supported or funded. Instead, they were able to identify their, “whys” early on and communicate them effectively to others and achieve unbelievable success.
How do you find your why?
Sinek shares, “If you simply take a look at your career, your past, and you sort of plot the times where you were naturally at your best, where everything went perfectly. Even if it wasn’t a commercial success, you loved, and that’s the important part, you loved being a part of it, and you’ll find that there is a pattern. You’ll find that the thing that was driving you in each of those times was exactly the same. That’s because that was your “why”. In those particular cases it was an accident, but when you know that cause, when you know that “why”, you can now do it prescriptively in the future.”
How to identify your company’s purpose?
“Every organization on the planet knows what they do. Some know how they do it, the things that you think make you different or special or stand out from the crowd, but very, very few people and very, very few organizations can clearly articulate why they do what they do, that purpose, cause, or belief that drives everything you do. And that’s really essential. All the great organizations in the world, all have a sense of why that organization does what it does.
